Niger shuts down six illegal mining sites in Kontagora

MINNA — The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate shutdown of six illegal mineral processing sites located in Kontagora Local Government Area of the state.

The operation, carried out on Saturday by the State Ministry of Mineral Resources, was supported by security operatives, including officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals from the Federal Headquarters in Abuja.

The exercise was led by the Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Muhammad Qasim Danjuma, alongside the North Central Zonal Head of Mining Marshals, A.C. Onoja, and other security personnel mandated to protect the nation’s mineral resources.

Before the shutdown, the enforcement team conducted a two-day monitoring and stakeholder engagement tour across Mariga and Kontagora local government areas aimed at strengthening mining regulations and promoting peace in host communities.

During the visit, the team engaged traditional rulers and community leaders in Wamba Ward, Mariga LGA, urging residents and operators to desist from illegal mining activities and warning of consequences for offenders.

The Commissioner reiterated the state government’s commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring sustainable management of mineral resources and improved security in mining communities.

According to the Ministry’s Information Officer, Dibie Maureen, the closure of the sites was part of efforts to sanitise the mining sector, curb illegal operations, and ensure mineral resources contribute meaningfully to the state’s economy.

She added that discussions with stakeholders also addressed community disputes linked to mining activities in Wamba, Mangoro, Igwama and Kasuwan Garba, with emphasis on restoring peace and strengthening cooperation.

Traditional rulers and community stakeholders reportedly commended the government for the intervention, describing it as timely and pledging support for efforts to promote lawful mining and peaceful coexistence in the affected areas.
