With fewer than 60 days to the commencement of the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, the Niger State Government has commenced the rehabilitation and upgrade of the Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna to meet international standards.

The project was officially handed over to the contractor by the overseeing Commissioner for the Ministry of Sports Development, Jacob Baba-Yisa, who described the initiative as a major step in Governor Umaru Bago’s commitment to sports development and the provision of quality sporting infrastructure across the state.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Baba-Yisa said the rehabilitation would provide a conducive environment for Niger Tornadoes Football Club to compete effectively in the upcoming NPFL season while also promoting grassroots sports development and nurturing young talents.

He added that the upgraded stadium would enhance sporting activities in the state, attract national and international competitions, stimulate economic activities, and create opportunities for youths in the host community.

The commissioner expressed confidence that the contractor would deliver the project within the agreed timeframe to ensure the facility is ready before the start of the new football season.

Chairman of Niger Tornadoes Football Club, Abubakar Kuso, commended Governor Bago for approving the rehabilitation of the stadium, describing the project as a significant investment in football development and a morale booster for the club.

Kuso also expressed confidence in the construction company’s ability to execute the project according to specification and within schedule, noting that the upgrade would provide the team with a befitting home ground for its league campaign.

Managing Director of the construction company, Isaac Obonyano, assured the state government that the project would be completed within 40 days.

He disclosed that the rehabilitation would include the installation of a modern synthetic playing surface and the upgrade of other key facilities to bring the stadium in line with contemporary standards.

According to him, the new all-weather synthetic pitch will provide a durable playing surface capable of hosting football matches and other sporting activities throughout the year.

When completed, the upgraded Bako Kontagora Stadium will serve as the home ground of Niger Tornadoes Football Club for the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League season.
