The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Federal Capital Territory Command, has deployed 3,000 personnel across the Federal Capital Territory as part of enhanced security measures for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations.
The deployment was ordered by the FCT Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu, to strengthen security, maintain law and order, and protect lives and property before, during and after the anniversary activities, the Command said.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the FCT CDPRO, DSC Monica Ojobi, the Command said personnel from several specialised units had been mobilised for the operation.
The units involved include the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, Crack Squad, Agro Rangers, Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Explosives (CBRNE) Unit, and Counter-Terrorism Unit.
According to the Command, the security operation will focus on strategic locations and areas identified as vulnerable to security breaches across the nation’s capital.
The areas include shopping malls, markets, motor parks, amusement and recreational centres, as well as Critical National Assets and Infrastructure, CNAI.
The Command also disclosed that its undercover operatives had been activated to carry out covert surveillance and gather intelligence, particularly around locations suspected of serving as hideouts for criminal elements.
It added that uncompleted buildings and other identified black spots within the FCT were being monitored as part of efforts to prevent criminal activities and possible security breaches during the celebrations.
Odumosu further directed Area Commanders and Divisional Officers to sustain a strong security presence within their respective Area Councils and ensure that personnel remained vigilant throughout the anniversary period.
The FCT Commandant warned personnel against lapses in security, saying, “As usual, I will not tolerate any form of security breach. All hands must be on deck. Ensure your personnel comply wholesomely.”
