The Federal Government will begin a monthly cash transfer programme that will pay N50,000 to selected vulnerable households.
The payment is intended to ease the pressure of rising living costs.
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
Doro said the scheme, called the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention, NERSI, is a presidential initiative aimed at providing short-term financial support to millions of vulnerable Nigerians.
“Under this intervention, eligible beneficiaries will receive N50,000 monthly, providing direct assistance to help meet essential needs and ease the burden of living costs,” he said.
The government linked the programme to ongoing food inflation and said it forms part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to the ministry, beneficiaries will receive a text message from the payment providers asking for their consent before money is sent directly to their bank accounts or mobile wallets.
The minister also cautioned that the programme does not require applications, fees, or registration through agents.
He advised people not to share their PINs or BVNs with anyone, warning against possible fraud.
The ministry said it intends to run the intervention with transparency and accountability.
