Despite the worsening cost-of-living crisis, Nigerians have once again been ranked among the world’s most generous people, according to the Nigeria chapter of the World Giving Report 2025, launched by the African Philanthropy Forum (APF) in partnership with the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).

The report, based on a survey across 101 countries, revealed that 89% of Nigerians donated money in 2024, the highest rate recorded globally.

Nigerians also ranked first for the largest share of income donated to charity, giving an average of 2.83% of their income, while volunteering an average of 13.5 hours per person, significantly above the global average of about nine hours.

The findings also show that Africa outperformed global averages in charitable giving, with Nigeria playing a major role in the continent’s strong performance.

According to the report, Nigerians are driven to give by deeply rooted religious beliefs, cultural values, and strong family and community ties. Giving through churches, zakat, tithes, and community support is widely seen as a moral and social responsibility rather than an act reserved for the wealthy.

Despite leading the world in charitable giving, Nigerians ranked only 22nd out of 101 countries when asked how generous they believed they were. The report suggests that generosity has become such a normal part of everyday life that many Nigerians do not view it as extraordinary.
