Folarin Balogun’s impressive start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup continued on Friday as the striker picked up his second straight Man of the Match award after helping the United States book a place in the knockout stage.

The Nigerian-American forward was instrumental in the Americans’ 2-0 victory over Australia, a result that secured qualification for the Round of 32 and confirmed the co-hosts as Group D winners.

Although he did not get on the scoresheet, Balogun played a key role in the opening goal after his high pressing unsettled the Australian defence.

Under pressure from the striker, defender Cameron Burgess inadvertently turned the ball into his own net in the 11th minute to give the United States an early advantage.

Balogun remained a constant threat throughout the encounter, using his pace, movement and ability to bring teammates into play to keep Australia on the back foot.

His display proved even more important with captain Christian Pulisic unavailable, as the Arsenal academy graduate led the attack with maturity and energy.

The award marked the second consecutive game in which Balogun has been named the standout performer for the United States.

He announced himself in style in the Americans’ opening fixture against Paraguay, scoring twice in a commanding 4-1 victory. The brace made him the first United States player to score two goals in a World Cup match since 1930, earning him his first Man of the Match accolade.

Born in New York to Nigerian parents and brought up in England, Balogun was eligible to represent three countries at senior level. After featuring for England at youth level, he opted to commit his international future to the United States, turning down the possibility of playing for both England and Nigeria.

The 25-year-old’s form has been one of the major reasons behind the United States’ strong start to the tournament, with the co-hosts emerging as one of the first teams to seal their place in the knockout rounds.
