NLO explains adoption of new format for 2026 Cup

Daily Post about 3 hours 1 mins read

The Nationwide League One (NLO) has explained the reasons for adopting a home-and-away league format for the 2026 Cup competition.

The NLO said the decision is aimed at guaranteeing more fixtures for participating clubs.

The NLO Chief Operating Officer, Dr Olushola Ogunnowo, disclosed this in an interview with the league’s media channel.

Ogunnowo noted that the number of games would depend on the size of each zone.

“A key benefit of the new NLO Cup format is the guaranteed increase in match opportunities. Instead of a single knockout fixture, the league format provides a broader schedule of competitive games,” Ogunnowo told the NLO media.

“The revitalised NLO Cup advances a more structured and competitive environment for NLO clubs.

“With more fixtures, players can showcase their skills, coaches can improve teams, and clubs can enhance their competitive identity.

“The home-and-away format will motivate clubs to enjoy the excitement of playing in front of supporters and to tackle the challenges of away games.”
