Nollywood actress Tope Osoba has been buried in Iperu Remo, Ogun State, more than a month after her death at the age of 40.
Osoba was laid to rest on Thursday, September 10, after a funeral service attended by members of her family, friends and several colleagues from the Nigerian film industry.
The funeral began with the movement of her remains from the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) mortuary in Sagamu at about 9 am.
They were taken to Akesan Club, opposite Iperu Morning Market, where a burial service was held between 10 am and 11 am.
Dressed predominantly in white, mourners gathered to honour the actress, with prayers and tributes highlighting her personality, career and relationships with those around her.
Among the Nollywood personalities present were actors Kunle Afod, Foluke Daramola-Salako, Alesh Sanni, Jigan Babaoja and Toyosi Adesanya.
Daramola-Salako, who fondly called Osoba “momma”, described her as a talented and cheerful person who lived simply, was free-spirited and enjoyed seeing people around her happy.
After the service, Osoba was taken to the Iperu Remo Cemetery, where she was committed to the earth amid tears, prayers and final tributes.
The burial came after weeks of uncertainty over the actress’s funeral arrangements.
Her family had initially scheduled her burial for August 13 but postponed it less than a day before the ceremony. The decision followed a candlelight procession and artistes’ night held in her honour in Ikeja on August 11.
At the time, the family said more arrangements needed to be completed before the burial and appealed to the public for understanding and continued support.
Osoba’s death had also attracted widespread attention after different accounts emerged about the circumstances surrounding her final days.
Before her death, the actress had publicly shared her experience with breast cancer, following her diagnosis around 2024. She underwent surgery and treatment and later announced that she had recovered and was returning to acting.
However, after her death on August 4, allegations emerged concerning events leading to her passing, including claims involving her relationship with her fiancé,
Actor Yomi Fabiyi, through his Break The Silence Foundation, had also called for an autopsy and police investigation into the circumstances of Osoba’s death.
An autopsy was later conducted, with Kunle Afod confirming that it had been completed. However, details of the findings and an official cause of death had not been made public by the time of her burial.
Cut Short Career
Osoba’s death brought an end to an acting career that spanned almost two decades.
Born and raised in Ogun State, she studied Business Education at Olabisi Onabanjo University before venturing into acting in 2005.
Her first known acting role came in Ijoya, a production by actress Laide Bakare.
She became more prominent in 2009 after featuring in Dayo Amusa’s Ogun Mi, and subsequently appeared in productions including Ifedolapo, Accident and Gucci Girls.
Beyond acting, Osoba also had a background in dance and appeared in music videos for artistes including Pasuma, Olu Maintain and Adewale Ayuba.
Her colleagues and fans have since remembered her for her talent, lively personality and contribution to Yoruba-language Nollywood.
