Serving senators from the North, under the aegis of the Northern Senators’ Forum, have condemned in the strongest terms the recent terrorist attacks in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, which led to the abduction of worshippers and residents in several communities.
The attacks have also drawn condemnation from both state and federal authorities following reports of killings and mass abductions in the affected communities.
Suspected terrorists reportedly invaded Dekara, Gidan-Zana, Kpenya, Sabon Gida and Masata on August 21, 2026, abducting an unspecified number of residents.
A survivor alleged that members of the Lakurawa group carried out the attacks and killed some residents. However, authorities said the exact number of people abducted and casualties was still being verified.
The Northern Senators’ Forum, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua (Katsina Central), urged security agencies to intensify efforts to track down the attackers and secure the immediate release of the abducted victims.
The senators described the attacks, particularly the abduction of worshippers from Kpenya Mosque after Juma’at prayers and residents of villages in Gidan-Zana and Kpenya in the Dekara District of Borgu LGA, as barbaric and unacceptable.
“Targeting innocent worshippers in a mosque and defenceless rural communities is not only cowardly but an attack on our shared humanity and faith.
“Reports of landmines being planted and further abductions to serve as bargaining chips are deeply troubling and unacceptable.
“We, therefore, call on the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services and all relevant security agencies to intensify ongoing rescue operations and ensure the immediate and safe release of all those abducted. The Northern Senators’ Forum stands in full solidarity with the people of Niger State,” they said.
Rescue Operation Order
Governor Umaru Bago condemned the attack as unacceptable and directed security agencies to rescue the victims.
The Niger State Government said a joint security operation had been deployed to track the attackers, while urging residents to avoid spreading unverified information and provide credible intelligence to security agencies.
President Bola Tinubu also ordered the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, DSS and other security agencies to launch a coordinated rescue operation.
The President directed the Service Chiefs to provide regular updates until all victims were accounted for and assured residents of Niger State of the Federal Government’s support.
The Northern Senators also urged the Federal Government to provide urgent relief, medical support and enhanced security reinforcement to affected communities in Borgu LGA and other border areas.
According to the senators, there is a pressing need for a comprehensive review of the security architecture in Niger State and the entire North-Central region to prevent a recurrence.
Both the Federal and Niger State governments pledged stronger security cooperation, improved intelligence gathering and community-based measures to prevent further attacks.
