NSCDC custody deaths: Panel seeks two-week extension to complete investigation

Daily Post about 2 hours 2 mins read

The independent committee investigating the deaths of 37 persons in the custody of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State, has identified institutional lapses and requested a two-week extension to complete its work.

Chairman of the committee, Jonathan Kure, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja, saying the panel needed more time to receive forensic and pathology reports required to establish the causes of death.

The committee, inaugurated by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on September 22, was initially expected to submit its report on October 7. It is now seeking an extension until October 21, 2026.

Kure said the investigation had uncovered elements of institutional breakdown and overzealousness.

He added that some personnel might require further training.

He said the volume of testimonies and documentary evidence had also delayed the report.

“By today, we should have turned in our report. But the peculiar nature of this investigation involves a large volume of testimonies and evidence which require our meticulous review and collation,” he said.

The panel said it had inspected the custody facility, conducted autopsies and taken statements from NSCDC personnel, survivors, families and other witnesses.

Kure assured Nigerians that the extension would not affect the credibility of the investigation.

“We promised Nigerians a thorough job. We are determined to do what is just, what is right,” he said.
