The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has expressed deep sadness over the death of a final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
The university said that it received information on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at about 1:30 p.m. concerning an emergency involving the student at an apartment within the Damico Area, Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, disclosed that upon receipt of the information, the University’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team immediately proceeded to the location.
It said that the Nigeria Police were immediately contacted, and officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joined the university’s security personnel at the scene.
“The student was subsequently conveyed to the University Health Centre, where he was certified dead by a medical doctor.
“The University is deeply concerned by the circumstances surrounding the death and has handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the Police for further investigation,” it stated.
The university further noted that the police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
It also said that it notified the appropriate student affairs authorities for necessary follow-up, particularly with respect to the welfare and support of students affected by the incident.
“The Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, has extended the heartfelt condolences of the University Management to the family, friends, classmates and colleagues of the deceased at this difficult moment,” it stated. “He also expresses concern for students and members of the University community who may be emotionally affected by the tragedy.”
OAU urged members of the university community to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information or speculations concerning the circumstances of the death, as the investigation is ongoing.
It further encouraged any student experiencing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures or other personal challenges to seek help promptly from trusted persons and the appropriate university support structures.
The Vice Chancellor reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of staff and students.
He added that “no student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone”.
The management assured the community that appropriate authorities were handling the matter and that further information, where necessary and appropriate, would be communicated through official channels.
