The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has disputed media reports that Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Alex Bagada was robbed of Shs129m, saying the reported amount and claims about his bank balance were grossly exaggerated.
In a press release dated October 27, 2026, ODPP Public Relations Officer Jacquelyn Okui confirmed that Bagada was a victim of a suspected robbery on October 8, 2026, and that the incident was reported to police two days later.
The clarification follows a report by ChimpReports titled “Assistant DPP Alex Bagada ‘Drugged, Robbed of Shs129m by Woman After Sauna Encounter’.”
The ODPP challenged the report’s account of where the incident occurred, clarifying that Bagada had gone to Alchemist Restaurant and Bar for dinner, rather than a sauna.
“The Office wishes to clarify that these amounts are grossly inaccurate and highly exaggerated, and therefore do not reflect the actual amounts involved,” Okui said, referring to the reported Shs129m allegedly stolen and the claim that Bagada had about Shs570m on his bank account.
She said the actual amounts involved were significantly lower than those reported but would only be confirmed after the criminal investigations are concluded.
The ODPP did not disclose the sums allegedly involved, noting that the matter remained under investigation by the Uganda Police Force.
“The matter was formally reported to the Uganda Police Force on October 10, 2026, for investigation,” Okui said, adding that the office respected the ongoing investigative process.
The prosecution agency urged journalists and members of the public to refrain from making comments that could prejudice the investigations.
It also condemned what it described as irresponsible, sensational and unethical reporting, arguing that the coverage had shifted public attention from the suspected criminal conduct to speculation about the circumstances of the incident and the money involved.
While acknowledging the media’s role in informing the public and promoting accountability, the ODPP called on journalists to uphold accuracy, fairness, professionalism and sensitivity when reporting on criminal cases.
The office reaffirmed its commitment to the fair administration of justice and the protection of the rights and dignity of all persons, including victims of crime.
