Ogun Assembly summons fire service, works, environment ministries over safety concerns

The Ogun State House of Assembly has summoned key government agencies and ministries over rising public safety concerns in the state.

The agencies invited include the Head of Fire Service, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, the Commissioner for Environment, the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, FERMA, and the contractor handling the Abeokuta-Sango-Ota Expressway.

Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Oludaisi Elemide, issued the invitations at plenary on Thursday.

He first summoned the Head of Fire Service and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Special Duties to appear on Friday, October 23, 2026, over the state of fire stations across the state.

The invitation followed a Matter of Urgent Public Importance raised by Waliu Owode, representing Ijebu East State Constituency, over a recent fire outbreak at Itele Market that destroyed property and means of livelihood.

Owode said residents of his constituency had repeatedly called on the government and relevant agencies for intervention.

In another invitation, the Speaker summoned the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, the Comptroller of Works, FERMA and the contractor handling the Abeokuta-Sango-Ota Expressway to appear on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

This followed a presentation by Babatunde Tella, representing Abeokuta North, who blamed persistent gridlock along the Brewery, Ita-Oshin and Idi-Ori axis on large roundabouts on the road.

Tella urged the House to intervene by reducing the size of the roundabouts to ease traffic flow, especially during peak periods.

Similarly, the Assembly invited the Commissioner for Environment, the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency and other relevant agencies to appear on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, over a suspected gaseous leak that led to the hospitalisation of schoolchildren in Ijebu-Ode and its environs.

The invitation followed a report by Lukman Adeleye, representing Odogbolu State Constituency, who noted that similar incidents had previously been reported in the area.

While commending the agencies for managing past incidents, Adeleye said they needed to brief lawmakers on measures to prevent future occurrences and areas where legislative support was required.
