Building Safety Awareness Programme, themed “Building Safe, Compliant and Quality Structures,” which took place at the Oronna Hall, pushed for strict adherence to approved plans, certified professionals and State building regulations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Speaking during the programme, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, TPl Abiola Ayodele, urged participants and the public to engage the services of qualified professionals to comply with the state’s building regulations, warning that any detected violation would attract stiff penalties.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He noted that the state government frowns at any action that could lead to building collapse, which could ultimately claim lives and destroy properties.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, represented by the Aguro of Ilaro and Secretary, Olu-Ilaro-In-Council, Chief Ayo Dawotola, signalled the traditional institution’s concern for the safety of lives and property in communities, enjoining all present to inform other members of their various associations and groups to adhere strictly to the standards as agreed at the forum.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Acting General Manager, OGBPMA, Builder Titilayo Oladogbon, took participants through the Authority’s expectations and the processes involved in building compliance, disclosing that the Ogun State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BCPG, a non-governmental organisation, to support the supervision of construction across the State.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The State Chairman of BCPG, Builder Ogunsola Adedayo, explained the Guild’s role in curbing collapses and promoting quality construction.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> He said its members were spread across the zones and work alongside OGBPMA staff and the District and Zonal Town Planning Officers to curb recurring collapses caused by non-conformity with standards.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Other professionals in the Authority encouraged builders and property owners to “Build Right” using approved building plans, engaging certified professionals and complying with OGBPMA regulations, urging property owners to obtain proper Building Authorisation letter and stage certification before and during construction.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Stakeholders used the forum to appeal to the government to make assessment fees and other levies affordable for all, arguing that high charges push people to avoid building permits and other statutory payments, a practice that had undermined the very safety issue the programme sought to promote.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca We humbly request that you benevolently approve that the remaining gratuity from January 2021 to June 2025 be released to would-be beneficiaries, to give our long-expectant members a ray of hope.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NUP chairman also called for the implementation of consequential adjustments in pensions arising from the 2019 Federal Government circular and subsequent increases in the national minimum wage.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, many retirees who left service 10, 25 and even 30 years ago still receive as little as N30,000 monthly pension despite the sharp rise in the cost of living.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oloyede said the situation had made life increasingly difficult for elderly citizens, particularly as the prices of drugs, food and other essential commodities continued to rise.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The cost of drugs, food and other necessities has skyrocketed beyond the reach of the ordinary citizen, resulting in serious health challenges and, eventually, untimely deaths,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He urged the state government to approve the pension adjustments, saying the move would provide relief to retirees, promote parity and improve the welfare of senior citizens in the state.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oloyede added that implementing the adjustment would also leave a lasting legacy for the governor, saying it would “imprint the governor’s name in gold in the history of the state.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pensioners commend Abiodun\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pensioners’ leader, however, commended Abiodun for what he described as significant improvements in the welfare of retirees, particularly the prompt and regular payment of monthly pensions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, unlike in many states where pensioners still face delays, Ogun retirees now receive their monthly pensions as and when due.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“You have restored our dignity and given us peace of mind. You have wiped away tears from the faces of our aged members,” Oloyede said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also commended the administration for clearing the backlog of gratuities owed by previous administrations up to December 2020 for state retirees and December 2021 for local government retirees, describing the payments as running into multiple billions of naira.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“For many years, many of our members died without receiving their gratuity. Your administration has changed that ugly narrative,” he added.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oloyede further appreciated the state government for introducing a free health insurance scheme for state and local government pensioners.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He, however, raised concerns over complaints about the implementation of the scheme at some health facilities, urging the agency supervising the programme to investigate the complaints and address identified challenges.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NLC seeks resolution of grievances\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his goodwill message, the Ogun State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Hameed Ademola-Benco, commended the governor for his interventions in the welfare of pensioners.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He urged the state government to consider all outstanding grievances raised by retirees, stressing that pensioners should not be made to struggle before accessing benefits due to them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We appreciate the governor for all he has done.
