Olympics Qualifiers: Nigeria’s Super Falcons eye Comoros scalp to set up Morocco showdown

Daily Post 21 minutes 3 mins read

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will look to finish the job against Comoros when both teams clash in the second round of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games African qualifiers at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, on Tuesday.

DAILY POST reports that Nigeria hosted the match against Comoros because the island nation lacked a CAF-approved venue.

The Super Falcons hold a 2-0 aggregate advantage from the first leg, with a blockbuster third-round clash against Morocco looming.

Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu scored in the first leg to put the Falcons firmly in control.

Despite the withdrawal of several key players, including Asisat Oshoala, Ashleigh Plumptre and Oluwatosin Demehin, Nigeria are heavy favourites to complete the formality against a Comoros team that offered little attacking threat in the first leg.

Super Falcons interim head coach, Augustine Eguavoen had earlier admitted that he was nervous when Nigeria failed to score in the first half against Comoros.

“I was nervous at the start because it’s an away game. A draw away from home would be good, but given our pedigree and the quality we have, we played them with the utmost respect.

“However, the barren 0-0 scoreline at half-time was worrisome,” Eguavoen admitted at the post-match briefing.

Meanwhile, Super Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie has warned Eguavoen’s side against underestimating Comoros.

The Brighton shot-stopper insisted that the Falcons are “not done yet” as Nigeria guard against complacency.

A win for Nigeria against Comoros would set up a March 2027 showdown with Morocco in the next stage of the qualification series, following the Republic of Congo’s withdrawal from the competition.

Morocco will not be an easy opponent, having ended Nigeria’s WAFCON 2022 dream before losing to the Falcons in the 2024 final.

Speaking with DAILY POST on Monday, media consultant and football development expert, Ibrahim Lawal backed the Super Falcons to beat Comoros.

Lawal also warned Nigeria against underestimating their opponents and cautioned the team against complacency.

“I expect the Super Falcons to get the job done against Comoros because they have the home advantage and a 2-0 lead from the first leg,” Lawal said.

“But they have to be careful of complacency because, in football, it is not good to underrate any team, and it is not over until after 90 minutes.

“I see Nigeria progressing to face Morocco, which will be a much tougher test for the Falcons,” he said.
