Chairmen of the 18 Local Government Areas of Ondo State have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the controversy surrounding the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary elections, insisting that the candidates who emerged from the exercise for the national assembly seats should be recognised by the party.
The chairmen claimed that the names of candidates who recently emerged from the National Working Committee (NWC) were different from those returned by the electoral committees that conducted the primaries.
Speaking on behalf of the Chairmen, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Ondo State chapter, Gbenga Fasua, noted that the appeal was borne out of a commitment to protecting the credibility of the party’s internal democratic process.
He commended President Tinubu for his leadership and commitment to democratic principles, while also applauding Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for fostering peace, unity and stability within the APC and the state.
According to Fasua, who is the Chairman of Akure South Local Government Area, the primaries were conducted by duly constituted electoral committees in accordance with the party’s constitution and guidelines, describing the exercise as peaceful, transparent and credible.
He added that the committees transmitted the authentic results to the appropriate organs of the party, including the National Working Committee (NWC), in line with established procedures.
Fasua, however, expressed concern that candidates whose names were not contained in the results returned by the electoral committees later emerged as the party’s nominees for some positions.
According to him, the development has unsettled party members and stakeholders across the state and could diminish confidence in the APC’s internal democratic system while deepening divisions within the party.
He urged President Tinubu, as the national leader of the APC, to ensure that justice prevailed by upholding the outcome of the primary elections conducted in Ondo State.
Fasua maintained that the APC in the state remained united and expressed confidence that the President’s intervention would reinforce the party’s integrity, strengthen confidence in its democratic institutions and encourage reconciliation among stakeholders.
He stressed that their position was based solely on the events that occurred during the primaries, noting that candidates emerged through votes cast by party members and winners were publicly declared at the end of the exercise.
The ALGON Chairman also dismissed speculation that they were mobilising for a protest, saying they are not planning to stage any protest, stressing that what they have presented is simply an appeal to the National Working Committee of the party.
