“Only God Can End Insecurity In Nigeria” — Tinubu’s Defence Minister Matawalle

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, has said that only God can ultimately bring an end to Nigeria’s insecurity challenges, as killings and abductions continue to rise in parts of the country.

Nigeria has in recent weeks witnessed renewed attacks in several regions, including incidents reported in Oyo and Borno states between May 15 and 17, amid ongoing concerns over insecurity.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Matawalle said the security situation requires collective effort from both security agencies and citizens, stressing the need for cooperation to address the challenges.

He also urged Nigerians to support security agencies and avoid politicising insecurity, warning against what he described as attempts by opposition figures to use the situation for political gain.

“It’s disheartening, and we must all rise to ensure that security agencies and Nigerians work together to end insecurity in the country. Insecurity does not discriminate based on political affiliation or religion. It can affect anyone,” he said.

Matawalle added that while government is working to address the crisis, some individuals were allegedly circulating old and misleading videos to suggest failure by the current administration.

According to him, some of the videos being shared on social media predate the present government, while others originate from neighbouring countries but are being wrongly attributed to Nigeria.

“There are fake and recycled videos being circulated, some dating back to the Jonathan administration and others from countries such as Burkina Faso and Mali, yet they are being presented as incidents that occurred under this administration. That is not true,” he said.

He further stated that security agencies are working “round the clock” to tackle terrorist groups and other criminal elements responsible for attacks across the country.

Matawalle also appealed to Nigerians to continue praying for the country while supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability.
