With the qualifying rounds of the 47th edition of the Central Bank of Nigeria Senior Tennis Championship concluded in earnest at the tennis courts of the Package ‘B’ of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, real hostilities will begin today in the men and women’s main draw chat on the tournament.
According to the draws, the men drawn to slug it out in the single’s Round of 64 are made up of players drawn from the National rankings and the few that made the cut from the just concluded qualifiers. There are also few entrants with wild cards.
The same format is applicable in the ladies single’s category for the Round of 32 battles.
In the men’s single’s, Abua Cannice is top seed while Adeleye Daniel is seeded 2 while Michael Emmanuel is number 3. Seed 4 is Danjuma Lucky while seed 5 is Mohammed Musa. Seeded 6 is Sani Inabo Yahaya.
Meanwhile, seed 14, Thomas Otu popularly known as ‘Star Boy’ who reached the quarter final stage last year, has vowed to do better this year by playing in the semi-final stage. Top seed, Abua Cannice, believes that what made him the top seed will also guide him to win his first CBN Senior Tennis title this year.
Also talking tough is women’s single’s seed 4, Udofia Mary who claimed to have corrected all the ills that worked against her and is rearing to do better this year.
On her part, Miss Toluwaloshe Agubiade who played older girls in the single’s and double’s categories of the ITF junior tournament in Abuja this year, promised to improve on her game by going far at this 47th CBN Senior championship.
Top seed, Abua Cannice will face Ureyang who came from the qualifiers in the single’s opener today while Timbra Godsgift will engage Kpum Later in another encounter. In the ladies category, top seed, Mohammed Kadilat will be up against Maxwell Timipre while seed 2 Emmanuel Essien Bright will battle it out with Bajo Puriniman.
