America is better than that.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senator Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said broadcasting the execution would be “a barbaric spectacle” that would give Hasan “more attention and more control” and “a global platform to amplify his hateful, anti-American message.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“This is a gift to anti-American terrorist recruiters,” Reed said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump on Friday backed the execution — saying Hasan “deserves it” and branding him a “maniac” — but did not comment on the plan to publicize it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Pentagon official told AFP the previous day that the execution would be streamed live, after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said “we’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, Hegseth wrote “Correct” when retweeting a media report about the planned livestream.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned the move, saying in a message sent to AFP on Friday that “the livestreaming of an execution is tantamount to a public execution and would breach the absolute prohibition of torture.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Archbishop Paul Coakley, president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, said it was a “barbaric promotion of a culture of death and must be reconsidered.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 id=\"h-compound-the-cruelty\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">– ‘Compound the cruelty’ –\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hegseth said it would be the military’s first firing squad execution since World War II — a reference to the case of Eddie Slovik, who was put to death for desertion in 1945.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“People need to understand that… there’s serious consequence for these types of things,” Hegseth said in a video disseminated Thursday on official Pentagon X accounts.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I kind of like the mentality we had in World War II, which was win, which was understand when the enemy attacks you, you need to stand your ground,” Hegseth said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last US military execution was carried out in 1961, when John Bennett was hanged for rape and attempted murder.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Death Penalty Information Center says that 135 soldiers have been executed by the US military since 1916.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to rights group Amnesty International, at least 17 public executions are known to have been carried out in 2025 — six in Afghanistan and 11 in Iran.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amnesty’s Justin Mazzola said Friday that the death penalty is “a violation of human rights,” and that streaming Hasan’s execution “would only compound the cruelty.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twelve of the 13 people Hasan killed and 30 of those he wounded were soldiers.He was shot and partially paralyzed by a civilian police officer who responded to the attack.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasan chose to conduct his own defense during the trial but called no witnesses and gave no testimony, and made no attempt to deny the charges.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was sentenced to death by a military jury in 2013.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Court-appointed defense attorneys expressed concern that he was seeking execution.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court that convicted Hasan was told he was opposed to the US military’s occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, and that he had spoken online with an alleged Al-Qaeda Marshal Nnaemeka Ignatius Ilo, whose involvement in the activities has underscored the importance of professional development, discipline, welfare and cooperation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Turning Military Experience Into Economic Value\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Earlier in September, NAFRC graduated 33 mid- and senior-level officers from Entrepreneurship and Management Course 19\u002F2026, organised in collaboration with EMPRETEC Nigeria Foundation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The programme was designed to help officers translate their military service, leadership experience and professional discipline into sustainable enterprise and economic impact. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Through classroom instruction, practical exercises and study tours, participants were introduced to business opportunities and the knowledge required to establish and manage enterprises.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Ilo described the occasion as an important milestone in the centre’s efforts to equip officers with practical knowledge of entrepreneurship and business management. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He urged the graduands to apply what they had learnt to their respective services, communities and future businesses while maintaining the values of discipline, integrity and professionalism.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The 33 participants comprised 17 mid-level and 16 senior-level nominations, alongside two senior officers sponsored by the Commandant. They were drawn from the Defence Intelligence Agency, Defence Space Administration, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force and NAFRC.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to the Director of Training, Brigadier General Isang E. He served meritoriously and was a mentor,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taofeek said Adogu was deeply committed to his duties and devoted considerable attention to mentoring younger officers, particularly in the maintenance of Nigerian Navy platforms.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Beyond discharging his duties, he mentored younger officers and ensured they were well-equipped to carry out their responsibilities, particularly in maintaining platforms of the Nigerian Navy,” he added.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the Navy was comforted by the enduring legacy the retired officer left behind, noting that many engineers had benefited from his experience and humanity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, the burial party had commenced preparations to ensure a befitting military burial in line with the directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taofeek urged serving officers to remain committed to national service, uphold the Constitution and discharge their responsibilities in a manner that sustains public confidence in the military.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">‘My father was strict but never harsh’\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an emotional tribute, Brittany Chidiebere Adogu, the deceased’s first daughter, described her father as a disciplinarian whose military background shaped his approach to raising his children but did not deprive them of happiness.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I am the first of four children of the late Commodore Bethel Chukwuma Adogu. Growing up, particularly as a family of mostly women, my father was strict but never harsh. His military background was very much a part of him, and he tried to instil that discipline in all of us,” she said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She explained that although the family had strict rules, her father ensured that discipline did not come at the expense of their enjoyment and happiness.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We had very strict rules, but even while disciplining us, my dad never took away our fun or joy. He always allowed us to enjoy ourselves,” she said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brittany said her father taught his children to be respectful, kind to others regardless of their status, and to conduct themselves with discipline and dignity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added that the values he instilled in them had remained important despite the children now living in different parts of the world.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recalling what she missed most about him, she said it was difficult to single out any one quality, citing his distinctive voice, kindness and generosity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I miss his kind nature. I miss his generosity. I miss the fact that he could be so kind to people, sometimes even to his own detriment. Most of all, I simply miss having him here with us. I miss all of him,” she said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the family was saddened by his death, she said the knowledge that every human journey must eventually end offered some consolation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colleagues celebrate his professionalism\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also paying tribute, retired Commodore Amatare Kpou, who spoke on behalf of members of the Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) 84 set, disclosed that 15 of the 52 officers who joined the Nigerian Navy together had died, with Adogu being the latest.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kpou said Adogu was the first officer on their course’s nominal roll at the Nigerian Naval College, Onura, earning him the nickname “DO-1”, meaning Direct Officer Number One.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He described the deceased as a strong, athletic and outspoken officer who was never afraid to express his convictions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Kpou, Adogu’s willingness to speak his mind sometimes attracted punishment during military training, when trainees were expected to be submissive and readily moulded by their instructors.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite this, he said, Adogu remained generous and self-sacrificing, often placing the comfort of his colleagues above his own.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kpou also praised his professional performance, particularly his work as a weapons electrical officer aboard naval ships.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said Adogu was later selected for defence training in Pakistan, a recognition he described as significant given the competitive process through which officers were chosen for overseas training.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The retired commodore subsequently served as Director of Weapons Electrical at Naval Headquarters and held appointments at the Nigerian Navy Dockyard, where naval vessels are built and maintained.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kpou said Adogu’s compassion remained evident even during his final illness, as he continued to offer assistance to other people who were also unwell.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He recalled that about a week before his death, Adogu called members of his course set to express appreciation for their support towards his medical treatment, despite the pain he was experiencing.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“For us, all that remains now are memories—beautiful memories of his presence, his past, his friendship and his candour,” Kpou said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that the deceased would be remembered for his professionalism, friendship, comradeship and faith, while praying for strength and comfort for his family.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">27 years of service\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born on March 23, 1957, in Uffa Community, Aguluzigbo, in present-day Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, Adogu was the son of Pa Benson and Mrs Isabella Adogu.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He joined the Nigerian Navy in February 1984 and was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his 27-year naval career, he served in several capacities, including General Manager, Plans, at the Nigerian Navy Dockyard, and Director of Weapons Engineering at Naval Headquarters.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His career was marked by professional dedication, technical expertise and service to the nation, particularly in naval engineering and the maintenance of military platforms.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is survived by his wife and four
