The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Imo State Government, will temporarily close the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri for approximately 25 days starting October 20, 2026, to carry out essential runway repairs and extension works.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the closure in a press statement, emphasizing that the intervention is critical to ensure aviation safety, increase capacity, and improve operational efficiency ahead of the traditional surge in Christmas travel to the South-East.

The rehabilitation project will address deteriorated sections of the runway pavement, treat extensive surface cracks, and fill potholes. Alongside resurfacing, the planned runway extension aims to upgrade the airport’s capacity to accommodate larger, wide-body aircraft, subject to regulatory requirements.

The decision follows an agreement between the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodinma, and other regional stakeholders. Keyamo praised the partnership between the federal and state governments, noting that a modernized airport will serve as a critical gateway for businesses and support the economic development of the region.

Addressing the inevitable disruptions, the Ministry acknowledged the inconvenience the closure will cause to airport users but stressed that aviation safety cannot be compromised. The temporary shutdown is necessary to allow contractors unhindered access to effectively execute the upgrades.

Passengers scheduled to travel through Owerri during the 25-day closure period are advised to contact their respective airlines immediately to arrange for flight cancellations, rescheduling, or alternative travel plans. The government has pledged to continue engaging with airlines and stakeholders to minimize disruptions, with confirmed reopening dates to be communicated through official channels.
