Fresh tension has gripped several communities in Logo Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue State following reports of an influx of suspected armed herdsmen into parts of the council, sparking fears of possible attacks on residents.
Local sources said the armed herders have reportedly moved into communities in Tombo, Mbagber and Ukemberegya/Tswarev Council Wards, where residents have raised alarm over alleged attacks on farmers and the destruction of farmlands by cattle.
According to a community leader in the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the presence of the armed herders has heightened anxiety among residents, many of whom, he said, fear that the security situation in the area could deteriorate if urgent action is not taken.
He further alleged that another group of armed herders had crossed the River Benue through Shaoo, Basham and Akor, west of Anyibe settlement, and were believed to be positioning themselves in the area.
He expressed concern that the group’s presence could pose a threat to Ayilamo, Anyiin and Iorza towns, urging security agencies to intervene before any attack occurs.
He said, “People are living in fear because of the increasing movement of armed herders in our communities. We are appealing to the government and security agencies to act swiftly before the situation gets out of hand.
“We cannot afford to have another attack on our communities, this time that our farmers are looking forward to harvesting their yams.
“That is why we are raising this alarm and calling on the federal and Benue State governments and security agencies to urgently reinforce security in the affected communities and take proactive measures to safeguard lives, protect farmlands and prevent attacks on our communities,” he added.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet could not be reached at the time of this report.
