Patrick Vieira, Arsenal and France legend, has been appointed as the Senegal men’s national team head coach.
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced Vieira’s appointment on Tuesday, marking the Arsenal legend’s first-ever role as a national team head coach.
Viera, who was born in Senegal and moved to France at age eight, previously managed five clubs: New York City, Crystal Palace, Nice, Strasbourg and, recently, Genoa.
Senegal sacked Pape Thiaw from the role in July following the country’s round of 32 exit to Belgium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Senegal had led the match 2-0 with four minutes left to play before the team’s collapse, and Thiaw was relieved of his duties following a subpar tournament from the Teranga Lions.
Consequently, the FSF has selected Vieira, whose appointment was unanimously approved following a meeting of its emergency committee on Monday. According to the FSF, the Emergency Committee meeting was well attended by statutory members, with Cheikh Ahmet Tidiane, 6th Vice-President, the only absentee.
The federation added that it chose Vieira to provide the national team with high-level, ambitious technical staff for future matches and tournaments.
“Following its deliberations, the Emergency Committee unanimously approved the appointment of Mr. Patrick VIEIRA as Head Coach of the Senegal ‘A’ National Team,” the statement reads.
“This strategic decision marks a new stage in the FSF’s commitment to establishing a high-level technical staff, fully aligned with our country’s sporting ambitions.
“Discussions regarding the administrative and contractual arrangements for his assumption of office are continuing between the parties.”
Vieira will be officially presented as Senegal coach at a later date to be communicated.
