Organisers of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) have stepped up mobilisation efforts ahead of a major endorsement rally for Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba scheduled for Saturday, 24 October 2026, at Mbale Cricket Ground.
Vision Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Don Wanyama, who is also assigned Patriotic Officer (PO) 086 in the PLU structure, revealed on Thursday that chief convener Paul Mugoya Wanyoto (PO 049) had met area Local Council Five (LC5) chairpersons to brainstorm strategies for the event. In a social media post, Wanyama stated that “all roads lead to Cricket Ground, Mbale this Saturday,” tagging several PLU officials including General Secretary Hon. Fadil Twalla, Daudi Kabanda and others.
The gathering, described in earlier statements as the Muhoozi Kainerugaba Museveni (MKM) Bugisu Endorsement Launch Baraza, aims to rally residents of Mbale City’s Northern Division and the wider Bugisu sub-region behind Gen Kainerugaba as a potential successor to President Yoweri Museveni in the 2031 elections. Promotional materials, including a yellow mobilisation van branded “Bugisu PLU Mobilisation Van | PO 049 P.M Wanyoto,” featuring Gen Kainerugaba’s image and the Patriotic League of Uganda lion logo, have been deployed in the area.
Paul Mugoya Wanyoto, a former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) youth leader, has emerged as a key PLU figure in eastern Uganda. Ranked number 49 among the movement’s top cadres nationwide, he has been actively organising grassroots structures, recruiting supporters and contesting as the PLU candidate for Mbale Northern City Division Member of Parliament. His shift from opposition politics to the PLU fold has drawn attention, with observers noting his role in bridging former opposition networks into Gen Kainerugaba’s political project.
The Mbale event forms part of a nationwide PLU drive to collect endorsement signatures targeting 20 million people and to hold rallies across Uganda’s 146 districts. Similar gatherings have recently taken place in Adjumani, Kayunga and other districts, with PLU officials reporting millions of signatures already collected. Gen Kainerugaba, who serves as PLU Chairman, has publicly thanked supporters and described the effort as a “quiet and patient revolution,” while urging 90 percent of the vote in 2031. He has also stated that President Museveni would serve as his campaign manager.
Local political actors have emphasised unity. NRM parliamentary flag bearer for Mbale City’s Northern Division Hudu Hussein Kahandi earlier warned against sidelining supporters, arguing that the endorsement campaign should benefit the wider Bugisu community rather than a few organisers. He described endorsing Gen Kainerugaba as “purchasing a ticket for our area in the future of this country.”
PLU officials have not confirmed whether Gen Kainerugaba will attend the Mbale rally in person. The event is expected to draw leaders, mobilisers and residents from across the sub-region as the movement continues expanding its structures ahead of the next general election cycle.
