ABUJA – Claims that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, failed to submit the names of its presidential and vice-presidential candidates before the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, deadline were on Wednesday rejected by the party, which insisted it complied fully with the electoral timetable.
The rebuttal came after a report alleged that the PDP was among three political parties that failed to upload their presidential tickets before INEC shut its nomination portal.
Rejecting the claim, the party said its candidates’ particulars had been submitted well within the deadline prescribed by the electoral commission.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the PDP described the report as ‘false, misleading and a gross misrepresentation of facts,’ saying it had met all of INEC’s nomination requirements.
“For the record, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) successfully uploaded the names and particulars of its Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates to the INEC nomination portal at exactly 11:50 a.m. on Thursday, 10 July 2026, in full compliance with the Commission’s requirements and within the stipulated timeline,” Jungudo stated.
The party said it was surprised that the report was published without any attempt to verify the information with its leadership, particularly as it was attributed to an anonymous source.
“It is therefore surprising that a reputable newspaper such as a major news platform chose to publish a report founded on unverified information attributed to an anonymous source without seeking confirmation from the party,” the statement read.
The PDP said the publication ignored the basic principles of journalism and warned that it was capable of misleading the public and creating a false impression about the party’s compliance with the electoral process.
Jungudo said: “Journalism demands accuracy, fairness, and verification.
“Unfortunately, these basic principles were ignored in the publication, resulting in the dissemination of false information capable of misleading the public and creating an erroneous impression about the PDP’s compliance with the electoral process.”
The party demanded an immediate retraction of the report, a public apology and a correction, insisting that its rebuttal should receive the same prominence as the original publication.
“We therefore call on Daily Trust to immediately apologise and retract the inaccurate report, publish a correction, and accord this rebuttal the same prominence in the interest of fairness, professionalism, and responsible journalism,” the party said.
