The 2026 FIFA World Cup has lived up to every expectation, delivering unforgettable drama, stunning upsets, emotional farewells and moments that will be talked about for years to come.

From Lionel Messi’s latest masterpiece to the emergence of unlikely heroes, controversial VAR decisions and hilarious off-field incidents, the tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico has produced no shortage of iconic images.

Here are some of the most memorable moments of the World Cup so far.

Few moments have matched the drama of Argentina’s astonishing Round of 16 comeback against Egypt.

With the defending champions trailing 2-0 late in the second half, elimination looked inevitable before Lionel Messi produced another moment of magic. After missing an earlier penalty, the Argentine captain pulled one back before levelling the score, setting the stage for Enzo Fernández’s stoppage-time winner in an incredible 3-2 victory.

The comeback instantly became one of the greatest knockout matches in World Cup history and added yet another unforgettable chapter to Messi’s remarkable career.

Norway stun Brazil

Tournament favourites Brazil saw their dreams shattered when Erling Haaland inspired Norway to a famous 2-1 victory in the Round of 16.

The result marked one of the biggest shocks of the competition and transformed Norway from dark horses into genuine contenders for the title.

Morocco’s fairy-tale continues

Morocco have once again become the tournament’s giant killers.

After knocking out the Netherlands on penalties in the Round of 32, the Atlas Lions produced another commanding display by defeating Canada 3-0 to reach the quarter-finals, proving that their memorable 2022 World Cup run was no fluke.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s emotional exit

For what is widely expected to be his final World Cup appearance, Cristiano Ronaldo’s journey ended in heartbreak.

Portugal were edged 1-0 by Spain in the Round of 16, with cameras capturing an emotional Ronaldo after the final whistle as one of football’s greatest international careers drew closer to its conclusion.

England survived a thrilling 3-2 contest against Mexico to reach the last eight, while Belgium produced one of the performances of the knockout stage by dismantling hosts United States 4-1.

Both victories strengthened their credentials as serious title challengers.

Themba Zwane’s viral red card reaction

The World Cup had barely begun before social media found one of its first viral moments.

South Africa’s Themba Zwane became the tournament’s second player to be sent off after Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio showed him a red card during Bafana Bafana’s Group A clash against hosts Mexico. While the dismissal itself was significant, it was Zwane’s stunned facial expression as the card was brandished that quickly spread across social media, spawning countless memes and becoming one of the defining images of the opening week of the competition.

Vozinha’s emotional family reunion

Not every memorable moment happened on the pitch.

One of the tournament’s most touching scenes came when Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha was reunited with his mother after she finally secured a visa to attend the World Cup. Having initially feared she would miss the tournament because of travel complications, she was able to watch her son play on football’s biggest stage, creating an emotional moment that resonated with fans around the world.

Amid the goals, upsets and controversy, the heartfelt reunion served as a reminder that the World Cup is as much about family, sacrifice and lifelong dreams as it is about football.

Paraguay’s historic mouth-covering red card

The 2026 World Cup introduced several new disciplinary measures, including stricter punishment for players attempting to hide abusive language by covering their mouths.

Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almirón became the first player to fall foul of the rule after video officials spotted him insulting an opponent while shielding his mouth from television cameras.

Following a VAR review, referee Iván Barton announced the decision over the stadium public-address system in a moment that instantly became one of the tournament’s most talked-about officiating clips.
