The Nigerian Medical Association,NMA, Federal Capital Territory, FCT chapter, has raised the alarm over the numerous challenges doctors face while carrying out their responsibilities.
Speaking at the kickoff of the 2026 Physicians’ Week at the Church of Christ, Kado, Abuja, Dr George Ebong said doctors were overwhelmed by the lack of adequate medical facilities.
Speaking on the theme, “Securing the Future of Medicine in Nigeria,” Ebong said the shortage of medical personnel in the country had significantly affected the doctor-to-patient ratio, leaving it far below the United Nations’ recommended standard.
He lamented that, beyond poor take-home pay and an unfavourable salary structure, doctors struggled to save lives with inadequate equipment at their disposal.
“Doctors are humans. We face daily challenges like other Nigerians. Don't put blame on us but the government,” he said.
DAILY POST reports that Nigeria has one doctor for more than 6,000 people, while this year’s Physicians’ Week is expected to run until the end of the week.
