The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Abia State chapter, has urged the Abia State government to intensify efforts in improving the welfare of medical doctors in the state.
The NMA made the call on Tuesday in Umuahia during the opening ceremony of Physicians' Week 2026.
The Chairman of the NMA in Abia, Dr. Daniel Ekeleme, who delivered the appeal in his opening remarks, said that investment in doctors and healthcare facilities in Abia will secure the future of the citizens.
Ekeleme, who said that the future of doctors must remain a priority, noted that their services are indispensable to an effective healthcare system.
He pointed out that the dedication of doctors in Abia must be matched with appropriate renumeration, timely payment of entitlements and improved working conditions.
While appreciating the steps being taken by the Abia State government to strengthen healthcare delivery in the state, the NMA said that improved welfare is required to prevent doctors in the state from migrating to other states or traveling to foreign lands in search of better jobs.
"The welfare of doctors must remain a priority. Doctors are indispensable to effective healthcare and their dedication must be matched with appropriate renumeration, timely payment of entitlements, improved working conditions, adequate staffing, and access to essential tools for effective service delivery," Ekeleme said.
The Abia NMA chairman said the theme of 2026 Physicians Week, 'Securing the future of medicine in Nigeria, Saving the Savers', highlighted the challenges some doctors face in the country, including those who slump and die on duty.
He harped on the need for physical fitness and relaxation by medical doctors, and also encouraged them to uphold professionalism and care for their patients.
