The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Plateau has unveiled its deputy governorship flagbearer and presented its candidates for all elective positions ahead of the 2027 general elections at an event that brought together party leaders, stakeholders and supporters from the 17 local government areas of the state.
The event, held on Monday at Zumji Event Centre, marked the party’s first major outing in the state as it seeks to strengthen its grassroots structures and mobilise support ahead of the elections.
The highlight of the gathering was the unveiling of Chungdung Pwajok-Kele, popularly known as Chungdung Kele, as the running mate to the party’s governorship candidate, retired Brigadier General John Sunday Sura.
Addressing party supporters, Sura said his ambition was driven by the need to confront insecurity, heal divided communities and restore Plateau State’s lost glory.
“I am not running to fulfil personal vanity or to disrupt the sacred zoning arrangements that keep our political house together. I am running to give Plateau Central and the entire state the focused leadership it deserves,” he said.
The retired general described his choice of running mate as a deliberate decision based on competence, integrity, compassion and commitment to public service, noting that governance required a strong partnership capable of addressing the state’s challenges.
“In choosing Chungdung, we did not look for mere political alignment; we looked for a character with intellectual depth, a person with great empathy and the shared heartbeat for our people,” Sura said.
He identified security and sustainable rural development as the two central pillars of the party’s agenda, promising to strengthen local security structures, revive agriculture and create an environment capable of attracting investors.
Sura said the joint ticket represented an opportunity to promote inclusive governance, stressing that women and young people should be recognised as strategic participants in decision-making rather than merely as voters.
Responding, the deputy governorship candidate, Chungdung Kele, assured the people of Plateau State of her commitment to restoring the state’s lost glory and rebuilding public confidence in leadership. She also pledged to work towards restoring the dignity of women, promoting their inclusion in governance and ensuring that their contributions to the development of the state receive greater recognition.
The event also featured the presentation of ADC candidates for other elective positions in the 2027 elections, signalling the party’s intention to contest across the state and expand its political presence.
With supporters drawn from the 17 local government areas, the gathering provided the party with an opportunity to demonstrate its grassroots reach and rally members around its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sura said the party’s vision would be driven by the mantra, “One Tribe, One People, One Plateau,” calling on supporters to unite behind its mission to restore security, promote development and rebuild the state’s standing.
