JOS — The Plateau State Government has condemned the attack on traders returning from the Bukuru Kara Livestock Market in Jos South Local Government Area of the state, describing the incident as sad and unacceptable.

The government, in a statement signed on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, said security agencies had been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the identities and motives of those responsible.

It said the directive was aimed at further protecting lives and property within the Jos-Bukuru metropolis, while extending condolences to the victims and their families.

“The Government, under the leadership of Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, extends condolences to the families and victims of the incident,” the statement said.

“To further protect lives and property within the Jos-Bukuru metropolis, the Plateau State Government has directed security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the identities and motives of those responsible,” it added.

The government called on communities, traders, pastoralists and other stakeholders to remain calm and resist attempts to escalate tensions or deepen divisions.

“There must be no room for reprisal attacks or the taking of the law into individual hands,” it warned.

“While security agencies continue their investigation, the Government is engaging relevant stakeholders to strengthen security along vulnerable routes and prevent further attacks,” the statement said.

It urged citizens to provide useful information to security authorities that could assist the investigation.

The government reaffirmed that it “remains committed to protecting lives and property and building a peaceful environment where all law-abiding citizens can live, work and pursue their legitimate businesses without fear.”

It therefore urged citizens to remain calm and go about their lawful activities.
