Police have arrested 124 drivers in a sweeping crackdown on drink-driving across nine divisions, with all suspects detained pending court proceedings scheduled for the following day.
The operation targeted motorists driving under the influence of alcohol in Katwe, Kampala Central Police Station (CPS), Kabalagala, Nsangi, Kawempe, Old Kampala, Nansana, Jinja Road and Kiira Road as police intensified efforts to curb road crashes.
SP Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to rid Uganda’s roads of dangerous drivers.
“Our message is clear: If you drink alcohol, do not drive. Arrange for a sober driver or use a special-hire vehicle to get home safely,” Kananura said.
“We will not allow anyone to endanger lives by drinking and driving,” he added, warning that enforcement operations would continue.
Katwe registered the highest number of arrests at 24, followed by Kawempe with 18 and Nansana with 16.
Kabalagala and Old Kampala each recorded 14 arrests, while CPS Kampala registered 13. Jinja Road had 12 arrests, Kiira Road seven and Nsangi six.
Police said the suspects would face court proceedings as authorities seek to deter drink-driving and improve road safety.
The operation is part of wider enforcement efforts aimed at preventing crashes and protecting motorists, passengers, pedestrians and other road users from the dangers of impaired driving.
