KAMPALA – Police have arrested 14 suspects during an intelligence-led operation targeting individuals allegedly involved in illegally siphoning fuel from motor vehicles and selling it to unsuspecting motorists in Kampala.
The operation was conducted on November 2, 2026, in Kitoro and Agip Zones, Kibuli Parish, Makindye Division, by Kampala Metropolitan Police through Kabalagala Police Division.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the operation involved a search and cordon exercise aimed at dismantling suspected illegal fuel siphoning and distribution networks.
During the operation, police recovered 192 jerrycans containing suspected fuel residues, 16 containers of suspected fuel and 24 fuel-siphoning tubes.
Security personnel also impounded two motorcycles and three motor vehicles believed to be connected to the suspected illegal activities.
“The recovered exhibits and impounded vehicles were conveyed to the station,” Owoyesigyire said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
He added that samples of the suspected fuel had been collected and submitted for forensic analysis to establish their composition and determine whether they were contaminated.
The 14 suspects were arrested to assist police with investigations and are being investigated for unlawful dealing in petroleum products.
Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the suspects or the estimated quantity and value of the fuel recovered.
The operation comes amid concerns over illegal fuel handling and distribution, which can expose motorists to financial losses, vehicle damage and potential safety risks where fuel quality and handling standards are not observed.
Owoyesigyire said investigations were ongoing and police would provide further updates as necessary.
