Edo State Police Command said its operatives had arrested a 21-year-old man, Innocent Emmanuel, for allegedly defiling an eight-year-old girl in the New Etete area of Benin City.
The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said in a statement that the suspect was arrested following a report concerning the alleged defilement of the minor.
She said the police received a report that the suspect had allegedly sexually assaulted the child while her parents were away from home.
According to the statement, the complainant alleged that the child had previously disclosed repeated sexual harassment by the same suspect.
The statement added that the suspect had been arrested and detained, while the victim was taken to hospital for medical examination.
She said an investigation was ongoing and that the suspect would be charged to court.
