The Borno State Police Command has explained the circumstances surrounding the arrest and subsequent prosecution of five suspects in Maiduguri over allegations of inciting disturbance, breach of public peace, thuggery, and possession of drug substances.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, the Command said its attention was drawn to viral reports and widespread public discourse concerning the case.
According to the police, the five suspects were apprehended on September 25, 2026, at about 6 p.m. by officers conducting a routine township patrol around the West End Roundabout area of Maiduguri.
The Command said the suspects were allegedly involved in conduct capable of causing public disturbance and were found in possession of 15 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, 100 tablets suspected to be D5, one shisha pot, one pair of scissors, and two T-shirts bearing the inscription, “Tinubu Must Go”.
The suspects were subsequently subjected to preliminary investigation, during which statements were obtained from them, the statement said.
“Upon completion of the initial investigation, the case was charged to court,” the Command said in the statement, which was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command.
The police said the Nigeria Police Force is a professional and non-partisan institution and does not discriminate against persons based on their political affiliation or viewpoint.
It added that the Command remains committed to the protection of fundamental human rights, the rule of law, due process, accountability and transparency in the discharge of its responsibilities.
The Command said the decision to charge the matter before a competent court was intended to allow the appropriate judicial process to take its course.
It urged members of the public to rely on verified information and allow the court to determine the matter based on the facts and evidence presented before it.
