Police arrest man wanted over alleged cyberbullying of clerics in Lagos

Daily Post about 1 hour 2 mins read

Police operatives in Lagos State have arrested a man who was declared wanted over allegations of cyberbullying and making disparaging comments about religious clerics and their beliefs.

The suspect, who lives in the Alakuko area of the state, was arrested on Tuesday following petitions submitted against him by some clerics.

Following the complaints, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, directed the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, to investigate the allegations thoroughly.

A police source said one of the petitions was filed by a prominent pastor of the Celestial Church in the Ojokoro area, who accused the suspect of making disparaging remarks about him and his religious beliefs.

The source added that a popular Islamic scholar in the Ogba area had also petitioned the police over similar allegations, accusing the suspect of making offensive remarks about him and his faith.

According to the source, the suspect was also wanted by the police in Kwara State, where a warrant for his arrest had been issued.

“The warrant is connected to cases of cyberbullying involving several other religious clerics,” the source said.

The source said the suspect had been profiled by the Lagos Command while the police awaited possible complaints from other individuals who might have been subjected to similar alleged cyber assaults.

He added that additional complaints would help investigators establish the full scope of the allegations and determine the appropriate next steps.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned after the completion of the investigation, the source said.

He assured that the investigation would be handled professionally and that all parties involved would be given an opportunity to present their evidence.
