Police authorities in Kaduna have arrested a suspected gun runner and recovered two AK-49 rifles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and other exhibits in Sabon Gari, Zaria.
The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna, Rabiu Muhammad, disclosed this at a press briefing in Kaduna, where he outlined several operations and crime-fighting successes recorded by the command.
According to the police, the suspect is 39 years old and was arrested on August 25 at Yan’Karfe Motor Park in Sabon Gari, Zaria, after he was seen acting suspiciously while carrying a sack.
A search of the sack led to the recovery of two AK-49 rifles, 228 rounds of RPG ammunition, 275 rounds of 7.62mm AK-47 ammunition, five AK-47 magazines and suspected hard drugs, the commissioner said.
In a separate operation along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, three suspected members of an armed bandit gang were arrested following credible intelligence.
The command said the suspects confessed during interrogation to belonging to an armed bandit gang operating around Millennium City and other parts of Kaduna State.
Police also reported the recovery of 134 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition from a motorcyclist along Kachia Road. The suspect allegedly told investigators that he had been sent by a notorious armed bandit identified as Yellow Mai-Million to collect and deliver the ammunition.
In another operation, eleven sacks of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis were recovered along the Zaria-Kano Expressway after suspects abandoned a Volkswagen Golf station waggon and fled on sighting police operatives.
The command also announced the arrest of three suspects in connection with alleged armed robbery and sexual assaults in communities around Rafin Tukurwa, behind Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
The commissioner said two of the suspects confessed during interrogation, while several victims and village heads had come forward with complaints against one of the suspects.
Meanwhile, two suspects were arrested over the alleged vandalism of a transformer at the Infectious Disease Centre in Mando, Kaduna. The police said the suspects and their fleeing accomplices tied up five security guards before vandalising the facility’s transformer.
The command also recovered a Toyota Hilux belonging to the Kaduna State Water Board, which had been reported stolen in Ungwan Rimi, Kaduna. The vehicle was recovered in Kano State after police operatives tracked and pursued the suspected criminal syndicate, which abandoned the vehicle and escaped into the bush.
The Police Commissioner condemned attacks on critical public infrastructure, describing such acts as sabotage that could endanger public health and safety.
He said the command would continue to intensify intelligence gathering, community engagement and targeted operations against banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, vehicle theft and other forms of criminality.
The commissioner appealed to residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to the police. He also expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani for their support, as well as residents for their cooperation in the fight against crime.
The police said all the suspects remain in custody and will be charged to court after the completion of investigations.
