(NYSC) members travelling to their orientation camps has triggered fresh calls for the Federal Government to overhaul the transportation and security arrangements for young graduates deployed across the country for national service.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The call came as the 20 prospective corps members, who were abducted in Imo State, returned safely to Ibadan on Thursday after seven days in captivity and were taken to the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in the Aleshinloye area of the city for debriefing.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mother of one of the rescued corps members, Faith Felicia Abiala, said the incident had exposed the dangers faced by young graduates travelling long distances by road to fulfil their national service obligations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abiala, who described her daughter’s safe return as a moment of overwhelming relief, urged the government to provide stronger security arrangements for corps members travelling to their states of deployment or consider transporting them by air.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“My advice to the government is that when Corps members are posted to their service states, they should ensure proper security arrangements, or allow them to travel by air to avoid these kinds of dangerous road journeys,” she said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mother recalled the emotional trauma that followed the abduction of her daughter, saying she was so devastated when she received the news that she could not eat.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I cannot recount all the tears and sorrow, but I give thanks to God that I am seeing her alive today. On the day she was taken, I was so devastated I couldn’t even eat, but today my heart is filled with joy,” Abiala said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also commended the DSS and the security teams from Oyo and Imo states for their efforts in securing the victims’ return.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I thank God, and I thank the DSS officials—they really tried! The team from Oyo State and the team from Imo State, they really tried and stood by us until our children came out safe and sound,” she said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another relative of one of the victims, Alhaja Alimot Akande described their release as a major relief after days of uncertainty.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It is good news! Good news! Good news!” she said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said the confirmation of the victims’ release finally enabled their families to sleep peacefully after days of anguish.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Ah! Immediately I heard they were released yesterday, I slept soundly!” Akande said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The abductors had reportedly demanded N50 million for each of the 20 victims, amounting to N1 billion, before the demand was allegedly reduced to N5 million per victim, bringing the total to N100 million.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The parents had earlier visited the private residence of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, in Ibadan, seeking his intervention in securing the release of their children.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Abimbola, and the Aseyin of Iseyinland, Oba Sefiu Adeyeri, were also involved in efforts to secure the victims’ release.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Olubadan subsequently announced the freedom of the prospective corps members after receiving confirmation from Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The kidnapped graduates have been released. I ran helter-skelter to raise the money. Some of us even changed the money to dollars and sent it to Imo State to meet whoever was coming to pick it. I am excited that my son is coming back. However, how do I repay the N6 million I borrowed? I’m just a farmer.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another mother detailed her negotiations during an interview with News Central Television. She revealed that the kidnappers initially demanded an astronomical N50 million per head.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Initially, they asked us to pay N50 million per head. We asked whether the amount was for all of them, but they insisted that no, it was for each person. Later, we started begging them to take N500,000. But they said no and started scaring us,” she said in Yoruba.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Three days ago, they called and said we should pay N15 million. We kept begging them that all we had was ₦5.5 million. They said no and insisted on N6 million. Twenty of them are in the bush. They then asked us to send three persons each to meet with them in Ibadan. My husband and my son’s elder brother went. When they got to the meeting place, they asked them to send the money to an account, and that when they got to Imo State, they should change the money into dollars. This is not a rumour. They have all been released and sent to us. His brother is among the people who went to meet with the abductors three days ago. I couldn’t sleep either. But I was relieved when I heard they had been released. The victims were rescued on 7th October 2026 at Amakohia Ubi Village, Imo State, following sustained search-and-rescue operations. The DSS was fully aware that we had converted money into U.S. dollars through a local currency exchanger (aboki) before delivering it to the kidnappers. It was a huge amount of money.
