The Abia State Police Command says it has dismantled suspected criminal camps in the forests of Umuaku and Nneato in Isuochi, following intelligence-led operations across the state.
The operation, carried out on Saturday, involved personnel from the Violent Crime Response Unit, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Anti-Cultism Unit, Intelligence Response Unit, Rapid Response Squad and the Isuochi Divisional Police Station.
The police, in a statement made available to Channels Television through the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, on Sunday, said that the operatives were deployed to bush-comb the suspected camps, but the occupants fled on sighting the security personnel.
They said that 28 human skulls and bones, suspected to be those of victims of kidnapping, were recovered from the camps.
The Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, said that the investigation was ongoing, while efforts had been intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
He also called on residents to support the police with information on suspicious activities, assuring that the Command would continue operations aimed at making Abia a no-hiding place for criminals.
