The Plateau State Police Command has recorded a breakthrough in its ongoing operations against armed criminal elements with the recovery of a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and an AK-47 rifle during an operation in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of the state.
The operation, carried out by a team of Mobile Policemen attached to the 81 Police Mobile Force (PMF), followed credible intelligence on the activities of suspected bandits operating around Kafi Abu in Barkin Ladi.
The command, in a statement issued by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, said the operation took place at about 8:23 pm on Friday, August 28, 2026, when the police team, led by the Commander of 81 PMF Bassa, moved into the bush area to confront the suspected criminal elements.
According to the statement, the suspects fled into the surrounding forest immediately they sighted the police operatives, abandoning the weapons in their possession.
A subsequent search of the area led to the recovery of one GPMG bearing breech number T1102-20CH00007, identified as a SARSILMAZ SAR762 MT, as well as an AK-47 rifle with breech number 1968M117479.
The development is considered significant in the police command’s efforts to disrupt the operations of armed groups and prevent them from gaining the capacity to carry out attacks in communities across Plateau State.

Following the operation, the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, ordered the deployment of additional personnel to the general area as efforts continue to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
The command has also commenced investigations into the incident, with the police assuring that further information would be made available as the investigation progresses.
CP Faniyan commended the operatives involved in the operation for their courage and commitment to duty, stressing that the command would sustain proactive policing, intelligence-led operations and other measures aimed at protecting lives and property across the state.
The Commissioner also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and activities to the nearest police station.
