Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched an intensive investigation and a manhunt following the murder of Unwana Okon, a resident of Ndot Village in Oruk Anam Local Government Area.
The incident was reported around 3.30 pm on Sunday by the victim’s brother, Eno, who told police that his sister had received a telephone call from an unidentified person inviting her to Mbiaikot village to buy African wild spinach (Gnetum Africanum), popularly called afang leaves.
According to the report, Unwana went to the village after receiving the invitation. She was later found murdered. Her mobile phone and an undisclosed sum of money were reportedly taken.
Police operatives have begun investigating the circumstances of the killing and working to identify those responsible.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, has ordered a comprehensive investigation.
He has also directed that the case be transferred immediately from the Divisional Police Headquarters to the Command’s Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU) for a thorough and coordinated investigation.
The aim, the Command explained, is to identify, arrest and prosecute anyone found culpable.
The Command also condemned the killing, saying it will deploy all available operational and investigative resources to bring those responsible to justice.
Police urge residents of Oruk Anam and neighbouring communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity or any information that could assist the investigation.
Anyone with credible information should contact their nearest police station or use the command’s established communication channels.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and tackling crime across the state.
The statement was signed by DSP Timfon John, Police Public Relations Officer, for the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, on Sunday night.
