The Ebonyi State Police Command has recorded major operational breakthroughs in its ongoing crackdown on violent crime, successfully rescuing an abducted clergyman and disrupting a clandestine cult meeting within the state.
The command’s Spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the developments in a press statement released on Saturday, detailing how police operatives foiled the kidnapping of a Methodist Church minister and recovered illegal firearms and stolen property.
According to Ukandu, the command received an urgent distress call on September 9, 2026, at approximately 11:55 p.m., reporting the abduction of Rev. Ede Sunday, a cleric serving with the Methodist Church in Ndulo Amofia, Ohaukwu Local Government Area.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was accosted directly in front of the church premise by two armed men. The assailants double-crossed his vehicle, forced him out at gunpoint, and whisked him away on a motorcycle,” Ukandu stated.
Upon receiving the report, the Command said it immediately deployed it tactical operatives to mobilise and launch a high-speed pursuit. Closing in on the criminal hideout near St. James Secondary School in Amofia, the operatives pressured the abductors into abandoning their captive.
“As our operatives closed in on the suspects, the hoodlums abandoned the victim and fled into the surrounding bush. Rev. Ede Sunday was successfully rescued unharmed, and his stolen vehicle was fully recovered,” the police spokesperson added.
The cleric has since been reunited with his family, while security forces continue to comb the general area to track down the fleeing gang members.
In a separate tactical engagement on September 7, 2026, operatives acting on actionable intelligence raided a suspected cultist gathering around a bakery in the Kpirikpiri axis of Mile 50, Abakaliki.
The arrival of the police team scattered the gathering. One suspect, identified as Oshim Chisom, was apprehended at the scene.
A search of a bag abandoned by the fleeing suspects yielded one locally fabricated Beretta pistol loaded with a live round of 9mm ammunition, alongside a mobile phone stolen during an earlier robbery that night.
Reacting to the successful operations, the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, commended the officers for their swift response, operational discipline, and tactical courage.
“We maintain an unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of every resident in Ebonyi State,” CP Okafor affirmed.
“Criminals will find no safe haven or hiding place within our borders. We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and continuously support our efforts with timely, credible intelligence.”
Police authorities confirmed that the arrested suspect is currently aiding investigators to expose the wider network, while manhunts remain active for all fleeing targets.
