KAMPALA — The Police Savings Association Limited (PSAL) has been urged to strengthen its role in promoting financial stability and improving the welfare of police officers through a stronger savings culture, responsible borrowing and sustainable investments.
The call was made by SCP Timothy Halango, Deputy Director of Welfare, Production and Sports, while presiding over the Association’s 6th Annual General Meeting held at Sharing Youth Hall in Nsambya, Kampala.
Halango attended the meeting as the chief guest, representing the Inspector General of Police, IGP Abas Byakagaba.
He commended PSAL for its continued efforts to improve officers’ financial well-being by providing accessible and affordable credit facilities, noting that disciplined saving and prudent financial management are essential to achieving long-term financial security.
He urged police officers across all ranks to embrace a savings culture, emphasising that even small but consistent contributions can help build a secure financial future.
Halango also called on members to work collectively towards strengthening the Association so that it can better protect their interests, support their aspirations and remain financially sustainable.
He noted that the evolving demands of modern policing place considerable pressure on officers’ physical, mental, emotional and financial well-being, making it necessary for PSAL to expand its contribution beyond providing loans.
He challenged the Association to position itself as a strategic partner in the overall welfare and financial empowerment of police personnel.
“The importance of saving, the reasons for cultivating the habit and the benefits it offers should be communicated to officers across all ranks,” was the message emphasised during the meeting.
Halango explained that members’ collective savings form the foundation of the Association’s lending capacity, enabling it to provide credit to members in need while exploring viable investment opportunities.
He said a stronger savings base would also help PSAL improve its financial sustainability and generate dividends for members.
The meeting provided an opportunity for members to reflect on the Association’s achievements, assess its progress and consider strategies for strengthening its capacity to meet officers’ financial needs.
Meanwhile, SCP Christine Nanding was re-elected as chairperson of PSAL, in a development that reflects members’ confidence in her leadership and their support for continuity in the Association’s management.
Her re-election is expected to provide an opportunity to consolidate the progress made and advance PSAL’s objectives of promoting savings, improving access to affordable credit and strengthening the financial welfare of police officers.
The Association’s continued growth will depend on members’ participation, disciplined financial practices and the effective management of collective resources to ensure long-term benefits for its membership.
