KAMPALA, Uganda — Police investigating the murder of Owori David, a captain of Villa Football Club, have recovered four bags containing dozens of suspected stolen mobile phones and other electronic devices as efforts intensify to establish the wider network behind the crime.
According to a police statement issued today, investigations into the killing established that the deceased was robbed of an iPhone 14 Pro Max during the incident.
Police said efforts to track the stolen phone led investigators to two suspects identified as Munyaneza Bashir, alias “Jemo,” who is suspected of dealing in stolen mobile phones, and his associate, Magoba Samuel.
The two suspects have been brought under investigation as police seek to establish their alleged involvement and determine whether they are connected to the murder and other reported cases of phone theft.
During the ongoing investigations, police recovered four bags containing a large assortment of mobile phones and electronic equipment.
The recovered exhibits include:
- 80 iPhones
- 40 Samsung phones
- 8 Redmi phones
- 2 Tecno phones
- 2 Infinix phones
- 2 Vivo phones
- 3 button phones
- 4 phone motherboards
- 3 iPads
- Various SIM cards belonging to MTN, Safaricom, Airtel and Lyca
Police also recovered ladies’ bags containing identification documents, phone covers and hard drives.
The volume and variety of the recovered items have raised the possibility that the suspects could be linked to a wider network involved in the handling and distribution of stolen mobile phones.
Police said investigations are still ongoing to establish the full network and determine the origin of the recovered exhibits.
Investigators are also working to match the recovered phones and other items to previously reported cases in order to establish whether they were obtained through theft or other criminal activities.
The tracking of the iPhone belonging to the deceased has therefore provided investigators with a potentially significant lead as they seek to piece together the circumstances surrounding Owor David’s murder and identify all individuals who may have been involved.
Police said the investigation remains active, with further inquiries expected to establish the complete chain of events, identify additional suspects where necessary and link the recovered exhibits to reported criminal cases.
The recovery of the suspected stolen property is expected to assist investigators in determining the extent of the alleged phone-theft network while providing possible leads in the murder investigation.
