The public prosecutor at the Dakar High Court has ordered an investigation following statements attributed to Speaker Ousmane Sonko concerning Touba. The investigation has been entrusted to the Urban Security Unit of the Dakar Central Police Station.
According to information reported by Seneweb news portal, investigators questioned Serigne Makhtar Bousso, spokesperson for the plaintiffs, on Tuesday. The proceedings follow a complaint filed on 14th July, 2026, by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso.
In their complaint, the plaintiffs accused Sonko of remarks he allegedly made during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters in Mbacké. He reportedly stated that “dirty money has entered the holy city of Touba”.
The plaintiffs said these remarks damaged the dignity and reputation of Touba. They are asking the prosecutor to summon the politician to provide evidence to support his statements or to respond to the accusations against him, particularly those related to defamation.
However, the proceedings could be hampered by Ousmane Sonko’s parliamentary immunity. According to seneweb, the Speaker of the National Assembly could invoke this status if summoned by investigators.
Furthermore, contrary to some reports circulating on social media, the same source indicated that Ousmane Sonko has not been invited for questioning and that no searches have been conducted by the Urban Security Directorate against him.
