Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), has cautioned the United States against releasing documents allegedly connected to past drug-trafficking investigations involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Buratai warned that making such documents public could amount to foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs, particularly if the information is released ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He made the remarks in a paper titled “Nigeria First: A Case for Protecting National Sovereignty and Dignity – A Patriotic and Non-Partisan Perspective,” which he published on his verified Facebook page.
According to the former Army chief, the controversy should not be viewed simply as an issue concerning President Tinubu. He argued that the matter could have wider consequences for Nigeria’s international reputation, sovereignty and political stability.
“This is not merely about Bola Tinubu; it is about 250 million Nigerians whose national pride, economic prospects, and global standing hang in the balance,” he stated.
Buratai also questioned why an issue dating back roughly 33 years was being brought back into public attention, especially at a time when it could potentially be used for political purposes ahead of the 2027 elections.
He maintained that Nigeria’s democratic and legal institutions should be given the opportunity to address allegations involving the country’s leaders rather than having foreign powers influence the process.
The retired general further warned that releasing the documents before the 2027 polls could give foreign actors undue influence over Nigeria’s electoral process and potentially undermine the country’s political sovereignty.
However, Buratai stressed that protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty should not be interpreted as an attempt to shield political leaders from accountability. He maintained that allegations can and should be investigated, but such investigations must be conducted in a manner that respects both the rule of law and the dignity of Nigeria as a sovereign nation.
