The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has appointed Rep. Afam Victor Ogene, who represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State, as its new spokesperson.
The appointment was announced in a statement signed by the Minority Leader of the House, Rep. Fredrick Agbedi, following an online meeting of the caucus held on Friday.
Ogene, who also leads the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDP) Caucus in the House, will now serve as the official voice of opposition lawmakers, articulating their positions on national issues.
According to the statement, the caucus expressed confidence in Ogene’s ability to effectively communicate its positions to Nigerians and strengthen engagement with the public.
It described him as a ranking legislator and respected parliamentarian with extensive legislative experience and a strong commitment to democratic principles.
The caucus added that his understanding of parliamentary procedures and commitment to accountability would enhance its constitutional role of providing checks and balances within the National Assembly.
The statement also highlighted Ogene’s background as an award-winning journalist and editor, noting that his communication skills would be an added advantage in his new role.
“As spokesperson, Hon. Ogene will articulate the positions of the Minority Caucus on national issues, ensure effective communication with the Nigerian people, and uphold the caucus’s constitutional duty of holding the Executive to account,” the statement read.
The caucus called on the media and the public to extend cooperation to Ogene as he assumes his new responsibilities. The appointment takes immediate effect.
