The Obio/Akpor Local Government Area (LGA) Council has announced a ban on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, from operating within the area, taking effect on Aug. 1

The Chairman of the council, Dr Gift Worlu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Port Harcourt.

He said the directive was part of efforts by the administration to strengthen security, promote public order, reduce road accidents and improve transportation within the LGA.

According to him, the activities of commercial motorcycle operators have, over time, generated concerns relating to traffic management, public safety and criminal activities.

“The council, after careful consideration and in the overriding interest of residents, has resolved to implement this policy to enhance the protection of lives and property across the LGA,” he said.

Worlu stated that from Aug. 1, all commercial motorcycles operations involving the transportation of passengers would be prohibited throughout the local government area.

He, however, clarified that private ownership and lawful personal use of motorcycles would not be affected by the directive, provided operators complied with existing laws and regulations.

The chairman added that approved dispatch riders, licensed courier and logistics operators, emergency responders and security agencies would be exempted from the ban.

“Enforcement of the directive will be carried out in collaboration with relevant security agencies and authorised council officials,” he said.

Worlu urged commercial motorcycle operators to use the period before July 31 to make alternative arrangements and ensure full compliance with the new policy.

He said the council would embark on extensive sensitisation campaigns to enlighten residents and stakeholders on the development.

The chairman appealed to residents to cooperate with the council in its efforts to improve security and public safety.

“The policy is aimed at making Obio/Akpor a safer, cleaner and more prosperous local government area,” he added.
