Russia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Borisenko Evgenievich, on Thursday received in audience Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador to Russia, Joseph Iji, in Moscow.

Ms. Daria Senyushina, Communications Officer at the Russian Embassy in Nigeria, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.

Senyushina said Evgenievich received Iji, who presented copies of his credentials.

According to her, during the meeting both parties discussed topical issues related to the development of traditionally friendly relations between the two countries.

She said the discussion bordered on intensifying political dialogue and deepening bilateral cooperation in trade, economic, scientific, technical, humanitarian, and other fields.

Diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the former Soviet Union date back more than 60 years, with an active Russian Embassy in Abuja and a consulate in Lagos.

The two countries have maintained a dynamic partnership spanning trade, military cooperation, education, and energy.
