Pregnant women in Sapele, Delta State, have received maternal health education and practical guidance on safe pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care at a programme designed to improve maternal and child health.

The programme, tagged The Big Antenatal Experience 2026, was organised on Saturday, September 26, by Nurse Georgina Aisosa Ebhonu, popularly known as The Nurse That Sails, under the theme, “Journey to Motherhood: Knowledge, Confidence & Safe Birth.”

The event brought together expectant mothers, healthcare professionals and community stakeholders for health education, practical demonstrations, childbirth experience sharing and spiritual support.

Participants received information on pregnancy danger signs, maternal nutrition, secondary infertility, newborn jaundice, HIV and Hepatitis B in pregnancy, medication safety, Rhesus incompatibility and cervical cerclage.

Other sessions addressed labour, vaginal delivery and Caesarean section, with emphasis on regular antenatal visits, professional medical guidance and timely intervention when complications arise.

A major highlight was a birth stories session, during which three mothers shared their childbirth experiences, including vaginal delivery, emergency Caesarean section and premature delivery following complications associated with placenta previa.

Their accounts offered participants practical insights into the realities of childbirth and underscored the importance of skilled healthcare professionals in managing pregnancy-related complications.

The programme also featured practical demonstrations on breastfeeding and newborn care, interactive discussions, exercise sessions and the use of a pregnancy journal developed by the convener to guide expectant mothers throughout their pregnancy.

In a move to encourage positive pregnancy experiences, five women won free maternity photo sessions through a raffle draw.

The Naval Medical Centre, Ogorode, Sapele, also offered discounted services to pregnant women who had yet to register with a healthcare facility, encouraging early engagement with formal maternal healthcare services.

Through the initiative, Ebhonu is promoting accessible maternal health education and community-based support to help women prepare for pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care.

The programme encouraged expectant mothers to attend antenatal appointments regularly, follow professional medical advice and seek prompt medical attention whenever they experience warning signs or other pregnancy-related concerns.

The organisers said the initiative was designed to reinforce the importance of adequate knowledge, access to healthcare, emotional support and timely medical intervention in promoting the wellbeing of mothers and newborns.
