The bill also reinforces penalties for offences, including a N50,000 fine for preaching or selling products inside public vehicles.

According to the provision, any person found trading, hawking or preaching in commercial buses will be liable. Nigerian Students, NANS, has warned the management of Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State against sending students away from the campus or stopping them from registering for academic activities because of inability to pay tuition fees, saying that would amount to being insensitive to the plight of the students.

The association, in a statement by the National President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, said the fact that the students are awaiting the payment of their tuition fees by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFund, should be enough for the school to exercise caution.

This is just as the association warned that anti-student policies would not be allowed to thrive in the university.

“The national leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has received with great discontent and strong resentment, the position of the management of the Federal University, Wukari, directing students who are unable to pay their school fees to defer their semester or academic session, while further warning that failure to either pay tuition fees or formally secure approval for deferment would result in the forfeiture of both the semester and the entire academic session.

“The management also stated that students who defer without approval or absent themselves without an approved deferment would be barred from registering for the next academic session. We strongly decry this position, as it is insensitive, anti-student, and contrary to the ideals of accessible and inclusive education.

“Humanity must always precede our personal dispositions in the management of institutions. This decision is cruelty in its purest form. At a time when the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has introduced the NELFUND initiative to make education accessible to ordinary Nigerians and every young Nigerian who aspires to pursue higher education, it is disheartening that the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Wukari is the very one frustrating students and keeping them out of school because of financial challenges that the initiative was designed to address.

“As the apex leadership of Nigerian students, we strongly condemn the position of the management of Federal University, Wukari for adopting a stance that is not student-friendly. This is a direct attack on Nigerian students and the education sector at large.

“It is on record that many of these students have already applied for NELFUND, which means the management will receive the tuition fees as soon as NELFUND disburses the funds. It is therefore inhumane for the Vice-Chancellor and the entire management of the institution to deny students the opportunity to write their examinations despite the assurance that NELFUND will certainly disburse the funds in due course.

“It is also on record that even when many students go out of their way to pay their fees before NELFUND disbursements, several institutions fail to refund them promptly. It was only recently, following sustained pressure from the leadership of NANS, that many of these institutions began processing refunds.

“According to reports available to us, over 5,000 students have been affected by this decision.

Considering the sheer number of students involved and the willingness of the Vice-Chancellor to deny them access to education, it is evident that his policies are anti-student. More importantly, his actions undermine the very essence of the NELFUND initiative of the President Tinubu whose vision is to ensure that every deserving Nigerian, regardless of financial circumstances, has access to quality education.

“Let it be unequivocally stated that there is no circumstance under which the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) will fold its arms and watch over 5,000 students be denied the opportunity to sit for their examinations on account of late registration, despite having secured funding for their tuition through NELFUND.

“Our position, as the apex leadership of Nigerian students, is clear and unambiguous: if these students are not allowed to complete their registration and sit for their examinations, then the examinations should not proceed for anyone.

“We shall continue to resist every policy and action that is detrimental to the interests and welfare of Nigerian students. It only becomes meaningful when it improves the lives of citizens,” he stated.

The don recalled a nationwide survey conducted ahead of the 2015 general election, saying that he was part of a research team commissioned by then vice-president-elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, to identify Nigerians’ expectations of the incoming administration.

He said the survey identified security as the country’s foremost concern, followed by the economy, corruption, infrastructure and education.

Pate who is also a Professor of Communication at Bayero University, Kano, noted that while successive administrations have made efforts in these areas, Nigerians continue to assess democracy largely by improvements in their daily lives.

He cited findings from the Afrobarometer survey across 39 African countries, which showed that while about two-thirds of Africans prefer democracy to other forms of government, only about 37 per cent were satisfied with how democracy worked in their respective countries.

According to him, “This reflects a gap between citizens’ commitment to democratic ideals and the actual outcomes of democratic governance.”

The communication scholar also referenced findings from the 2024 African Young People Survey, which revealed that many young Africans are considering emigrating due to corruption and limited opportunities, warning that such sentiments pose serious questions about the future of democracy on the continent.

Pate identified historical grievances, identity politics, social and economic exclusion, youth unemployment, weak institutions and governance deficits as major factors undermining democratic consolidation in Nigeria.

He argued that: “Identity politics has continued to shape political participation, often placing greater emphasis on ethnicity, religion and place of origin than on competence and shared national values.”

He also expressed concern over the collapse of local government institutions in many parts of the country, saying that grassroots governance had previously played a significant role in resolving community disputes, providing basic services and creating economic opportunities.

The professor warned that: “Misinformation, hate speech and divisive narratives amplified through digital platforms are worsening existing social tensions. Nigeria’s challenge is no longer the absence of information but the abundance of false information and the scarcity of public attention.”

He further linked insecurity to rising poverty, hunger, unemployment, environmental challenges and weak governance, arguing that conflicts discourage investment, reduce agricultural productivity and deepen economic hardship.

Maintaining that security remains Nigerians’ greatest expectation of government, Pate noted that the country continues to grapple with insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, communal conflicts, separatist agitations and urban crime.

He called for stronger institutions, inclusive governance and policies that address the root causes of insecurity and inequality, insisting that democracy would only endure if it delivers peace, opportunity and improved living conditions for all Nigerians.

In his remarks, the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Lagos, Michael Deleen, expressed concern over the rising level of poverty in Nigeria, attributing it largely to challenges in the country’s education system and democratic governance.

He said education remains critical to empowering citizens, adding that informed and educated people are better equipped to make decisions based on knowledge rather than circumstance.

He therefore urged the government to prioritise addressing the nation’s education and governance challenges, noting that doing so would help reduce poverty and promote sustainable development.

The event featured a review and unveiling of the 2025 civic space status report and panel discussions examining how sophisticated surveillance technologies, institutionalised harassment and shrinking press freedoms are threatening journalists’ safety and the public’s right to information.

The sessions also explored democracy beyond periodic elections, emphasising the need to assess it through good governance, accountability, responsiveness and public trust in institutions.

","wole-soyinka-92-varsity-don-calls-for-democracy-that-delivers-security-economic-prosperity
[1898,1899,1900,1901,1902,1289,1903,1904,1905,1906],"wole","soyinka","varsity","don","calls","delivers","security","economic","prosperity","https://global.ariseplay.com/amg/www.thisdaylive.com/uploads/1000993148.jpg
"676b27a5-8a43-458d-91ba-45c07367106b","2026-03-26T09:35:16.600Z","2026-04-20T09:31:29.000Z","This Day","https://api.oneclickafrica.com/media/feed/9fa91fe1-7788-42ef-8d40-5d5ef6e5261e.png","this-day","https://www.thisdaylive.com/2026/07/14/wole-soyinka-92-varsity-don-calls-for-democracy-that-delivers-security-economic-prosperity/
"cf6af9f3-9396-4c5d-ae36-89cc7c69877d","2026-07-13T17:16:00.867Z","2026-07-15T17:15:46.000Z","Nigeria’s democracy needs a new professional ethic for reporting religion – Dapo","Dapo Olorunyomi, a media chief executive has says that Nigeria’s democracy needs a new professional ethic for reporting religion, refering
read more Nigeria’s democracy needs a new professional ethic for reporting religion – Dapo","<img src="https://cdn.businessday.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-35-large.png" alt="Nigeria’s democracy needs a new professional ethic for reporting religion – governance.

In a statement signed by its President, Prof. Elochukwu Amucheazi, and Secretary, Prof. Jerry Chukwuokolo, the group cautioned that actions perceived as limiting opposition activities could undermine the credibility of the 2027 elections and the country’s democratic process.

The group referenced recent concerns raised by the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, regarding his security and business interests, as well as court rulings affecting some opposition parties.

ILT also referred to previous remarks attributed to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo concerning Peter Obi’s security during a visit to the state, and alleged that gunshots were fired during one of Obi’s political engagements in Edo earlier this year.

According to the group, weakening opposition parties years of struggle against military rule,” the statement said, adding that the country requires a strong opposition to deepen democratic governance.

The group also expressed concern over what it described as the use of state institutions, including the judiciary, security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in ways that could hinder opposition parties from effectively participating in the electoral process.

It warned against a situation where Nigeria could drift towards a de facto one-party state, arguing that democracy thrives on political pluralism, competition and the protection of dissenting voices.

Citing historical examples, ILT recalled the political crises of the First and Second Republics, as well as the violence that followed the 2011 presidential election, urging political leaders to learn from history and avoid actions capable of triggering instability.

The group also criticised recent judicial decisions affecting opposition parties, particularly a Federal High Court judgment in Lokoja involving the NDC, arguing that the judiciary should uphold constitutional principles and strengthen democratic institutions.

ILT welcomed the NDC’s position came amid the recent alarm raised by the presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr. Peter Obi, over his safety and systematic frustration of his businesses, as well as the several judicial pronouncements against the key opposition parties aimed at destabilizing their preparations for the 2027 polls.

ILT also recalled that Prof. Jerry Chukwuokolo, the Secretary, also frowned at the use of state institutions, including the judiciary, security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to electoral body filed to challenge the judgment the Federal High Court delivered on May 20.

According to the appellate court, the trial court failed to follow binding that such subsidiary legislation has the same force of law as the Electoral Act, adding that the INEC acted within its statutory powers.

The appellate court maintained that every deadline in the Revised Timetable for the 2027 general elections fell within the ambit of the Electoral Act.

INEC had in its notice of appeal dated May 25, raised nine grounds it urged the appellate court to consider and vacate the high court judgment.

Aside from its contention that the high court erred in law when it failed Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026 mandates Political Parties to submit the names of candidates in prescribed forms of the candidates who emerged from their valid primaries which such a political party intends to sponsor at
the elections, not later than 120 days before the date of the General Election.

“What is required of Political Parties to do under the Electoral Act, 2026 is to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) 21 days before the holding of its primaries, congresses or conventions, days before the holding of its primaries, congresses or conventions, or any conference or meeting convened for the election of its executive committees, other governing bodies for nominating candidates.

“The Defendant is not mandated to impose a timeframe for political parties to conduct their primaries provided that it will be done and submitted not later than the 120 days provided by the Electoral Act, 2026.
