Senate shift national security summit in honour of 25 officers killed in NAF crash

Daily Post about 1 hour 2 mins read

The Senate has postponed its two-day National Security Summit scheduled for Monday, October 12 and Tuesday, 13, 2026, in honour of victims of the Nigerian Air Force, NAF ATR-42 aircraft crash.

The upper chamber announced the postponement on Tuesday, saying it was consequent upon the tragic crash in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State.

Leader of the Senate and Chairman, Senate Ad-hoc Committee on the National Security Summit, Opeyemi Bamidele, disclosed this in a statement he personally signed on Tuesday.

The NAF ATR-42 aircraft crashed on Monday, claiming the lives of officers and crew members on board.

The Senate had convened the security summit to review the country’s perennial security challenges and propose pragmatic solutions to guarantee security of lives and property.

Bamidele said the ad-hoc committee had concluded plans to hold the summit after completion of zonal public hearings, but the crash necessitated the postponement.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier declared three days of national mourning in honour of the victims and directed that national flags be flown at half-mast nationwide.

With the declaration, the Senate resolved that the summit be deferred till further notice in honour of the victims.

The Senate extended condolences to President Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces, particularly the NAF, and families of the officers and crew who paid the supreme price in active service.

It said a new date for the summit would be communicated in due course and appealed to stakeholders to bear with the Senate during the period of national mourning.
